The Petzl I’D S Descender is a self-braking descender designed for work at height and rope access applications. Developed for experienced rope access technicians, it combines an ergonomic handle, integrated anti-panic function, anti-error catch and AUTO-LOCK system to provide controlled descent, work positioning and versatile rope handling. The I’D S is compatible with 10–11.5 mm ropes and weighs 600 g.

Easy Rope Installation and Descent Control

The moving side plate features a safety gate that allows the rope to be installed while the I’D S remains connected to the harness. Clear markings and a rope guide help make installation straightforward, while the anti-error catch helps reduce the risk associated with incorrect rope installation.

Its ergonomic handle provides comfortable control of descent speed and allows smooth movement along inclined or horizontal terrain. The I’D S offers two possible descent modes, with the rope running either against the side plate or through the V-shaped friction channel.

Anti-Panic and AUTO-LOCK Functions

The integrated anti-panic function automatically stops the descent if the user pulls too hard on the handle, providing an additional safety feature during controlled descent.

The AUTO-LOCK system automatically locks the rope when the handle is released. This allows users to position themselves at a workstation without continuously manipulating the handle or manually tying off the device. The handle’s automatic return system also helps reduce the possibility of accidental snagging when the descender is being carried on the harness.

Versatile for Rope Access Work

The I’D S is designed for more than descending. Once the rope is locked, it can be taken up without manipulating the handle, making the device suitable for reversible hauling systems and short rope ascents.

The cam can be manipulated to feed out slack and the descender can also be used to belay a lead climber using climbing techniques. Its moving side plate locks with a screw, allowing the I’D S to be integrated into rescue kits.

An auxiliary brake, available separately in open or closed configurations, can be added to improve descent control according to the load and rope diameter.

Durable Rope-Friction Zone

A stainless steel wear plate reinforces the rope-friction area, helping improve durability during repeated professional use. The I’D S is constructed from aluminum, steel and nylon and is designed for demanding rope-access environments.
