The Petzl I’D L Descender is a self-braking descender designed for experienced rope-access technicians and rescue professionals working with fixed ropes. Built around an ergonomic handle, integrated anti-panic function and AUTO-LOCK system, it provides controlled descent, work positioning and versatile handling during rescue operations. The I’D L is designed for use with 12.5–13 mm ropes and supports lowering loads of up to 150 kg for one person and 280 kg when used for rescue.
Easy and Intuitive Rope Installation
The I’D L features a safety gate on its moving side plate, allowing the rope to be installed while the device remains connected to the harness. Clear markings and an integrated rope guide help simplify correct rope installation.
An anti-error catch helps reduce the risk of incorrect installation, while the ergonomic handle provides comfortable control of the descent. Two descent modes are available, allowing the rope to run either against the side plate or through the V-shaped friction channel.
Anti-Panic and AUTO-LOCK Functions
Safety and control are central to the I’D L’s design. Its anti-panic function automatically stops the descent if the user pulls too hard on the handle, helping provide an additional safeguard during descent.
The AUTO-LOCK system automatically locks the rope when the handle is released, allowing users to position themselves without continuously manipulating the handle or tying off the device. The handle’s automatic return system also helps reduce the risk of accidental snagging when working or carrying the device on a harness.
Versatile for Rope Access and Rescue
The I’D L can be used for more than controlled descents. Once the rope is locked, it can be taken up without operating the handle, making the device useful for reversible hauling systems and short rope ascents.
The cam can also be manipulated to feed out slack and allows the I’D L to be used for belaying a lead climber with climbing techniques. Its moving side plate locks with a screw, allowing the descender to be integrated into rescue kits.
Adjustable Descent Control and Durability
An auxiliary brake can be added to the I’D L to increase friction and improve descent control according to the load and rope diameter. Petzl offers both open and closed auxiliary brake options for the I’D range.
A stainless steel wear plate reinforces the rope-friction zone, improving durability in demanding professional applications. The I’D L is constructed from aluminum, steel and nylon and weighs 600 g.
