The DMM Rhino HMS Locking is a purpose-designed HMS connector for belaying, rigging, and rope-control applications where reliable positioning and smooth operation are essential. Its pear-shaped HMS profile provides additional space for larger ropes, knots, devices, and multiple components while helping them self-centre during use.
The Rhino combines a wide, full-radius basket with a pronounced horn and flat base to encourage optimal loading and orientation. Available with Screwgate, Kwiklock, or Locksafe locking mechanisms, it offers flexibility for different climbing and work-at-height requirements.

HMS Design for Belaying and Rigging
The DMM Rhino HMS Locking features a pear-shaped HMS profile that provides additional room for rope systems and connected components. The extended basket allows devices and connectors to move and self-centre, while knots such as an Italian hitch can rotate smoothly between taking in and paying out.
The generous shape also provides additional space for larger-diameter ropes and is designed to feel secure when operated with gloves.
Taperlock Nose for Snag-Free Connections
DMM’s patented Taperlock closing mechanism uses a flared nose profile to improve gate push-in and cross-gate strength. The design also helps create a snag-free connection when handling ropes, slings, and other equipment.
Wide Full-Radius Basket
The wide, full-radius basket provides a smooth contact area for ropes and compatible devices. This design supports consistent rope handling and provides useful space when multiple components are connected.
Horn and Flat Base for Correct Positioning
The pronounced horn at the top of the Rhino’s spine helps prevent assisted braking devices and rope controllers from twisting around the spine and cross-loading the connector.
The flat base helps the Rhino sit securely on the belay loop and works together with the horn to encourage correct orientation during use.
I-Beam Construction
The Rhino uses I-Beam construction to provide an efficient balance between strength and weight. The three locking configurations share the same 75 x 100mm dimensions and provide a 27kN major-axis MBS.
Locking Gate Options
Screwgate: A manual locking mechanism requiring the barrel to be screwed or unscrewed to lock or unlock the gate.
Kwiklock: An auto-locking mechanism requiring two distinct actions to open.
Locksafe: An auto-locking mechanism requiring three distinct actions to open.
